The Stars had a 1-0 lead before Rick Nash tied it for the Rangers when he tipped in Brady Skjei’s wrist shot with 3:41 left in regulation. Nash made contact with Lehtonen but the goalie was well outside the blue paint. Hitchcock challenged the play, but the referees stayed with the original call.
The difference here is Montana was coming off of an injury and Steve Young had been groomed for several years to replace him. Geno Smith and Davis Webb are not Steve Young as of yet, and Eli did not suffer an injury that forced the Giants’ hand. It’s all an odd situation and one that now has Manning looking more like collateral damage than the direct cause.
Asked if the team will need to keep closer tabs on McDowell in light of his arrest, Carroll said: “I think we’re definitely going to work to help him in every way that we can. We’ve already talked about that. Let’s hope that this isn’t an indicator of things to come. I hope that he has turned with this experience. He sounds very much intending to do that.
